‘Generation Art’

An intergenerational arts project working with primary school and seniors in the Ards Peninsula

Co-ordinated by LGNI and funded in 2016 by the Arts Council NI Generation Art was a project aiming to engage older people in intergenerational arts projects in the Ards Peninsula, targeting loneliness and social isolation. It’s objective was to support improved understanding and mutual respect between generations through the channel of creative arts.

The visual arts project linked older peoples groups from Ballywalter and Portavogie with pupils from the local primary schools. The groups came together to create art that was both personal to the individual and reflected a more age-friendly community.
Through the artwork, the groups explored the perceptions young people have of older people and vice versa with consideration given to what we have today and differences in what was more usual in past generations.

The project closed with a showcase exhibition in April at the Ards Arts Centre, attended by the participants and Deputy Mayor Carl McClean, where all the artworks were exhibited and celebrations were had of all the new friendships made.
